                                                What made The Glenlivet the definitive single malt as early as the 1840s is still true today…

These are the three key points that distinguish The Glenlivet from other Speyside malts, three things that have been true to the Glenlivet  since George Smith first began distilling his whisky.

1. The natural, mineral rich spring water from Josie’s Well.
2. The taller, wider stills: an innovation of George Smith himself.
3. And the very careful, slow maturation of the whisky.

The waters of Josie’s Well have an unusually high minerality – assisted by the limestone that runs beside the distillery, which helps during mashing (the whisky making process.) The high proportion of sugars creates a unique composition of flavour compounds during fermentation when the yeast is added.

The Glenlivet sits very high up – 900 metres above sea level. The high altitude lowers the boiling point during distillation of the precious spirit.

Lagavulin Distillery

Part of the triumvirate of heavily-peated southern Islay malts, alongside LVMH’s Ardbeg and Beam Global’s Laphroaig, Lagavulin was officially founded in 1816 by John Johnston (although illicit distillation is said to have been carried out on the site since the mid-eighhteenth centrury) and has been the Islay representative of Diageo’s Classic Malt selection since 1987.  The histories of Lagavulin and Laphroaig have been closely tied together, with Laphroaig said to have been founded by the son of the founder of Lagavulin. 

Macallan whisky is one of the most recognised whisky brands in the world with a long heritage of producing top notch whiskies.  In 2002, the Macallan Fine & Rare collection was started which one several accolades from industry experts.  In 2004, Macallan received another Queen’s Award for Enterprise and launched the Macallan Fine Oak to more critical acclaim.  In 2005, a single bottle of 1926 Macallan Fine & Rare went for £36000 at auction.  In the future, Macallan is sure to carry on impressing whisky lovers and critics alike and could be a great way of investing some money.
