Balblair Whisky Distillery

Balblair is the second oldest distillery in Scotland with distillation dating back to the 1740’s and its position overlooking the Dornoch Firth in the far north east of the highlands of Scotland is just like the whisky – breathtaking. The present buildings were built in 1870 and have not changed much since then.

The single malt whisky produced is without doubt out of the top drawer and deserves far greater exposure than has hitherto been the case. These are multi-award winning whiskies and perhaps recent changes to the presentation and the introduction of new vintages will introduce Balblair single malt whisky to a much greater audience.

The Royal Lochnagar whisky distillery is situated in Royal Deeside not far from Balmoral the Queen’s summer residence.

Distilling first took place in the area in 1826 but 1845 is the date of the current distillery. A visitor centre is open all year and is a highly popular outing for the many visitors to the area who over the years have included many prime ministers and other guests at the nearby royal estate. Each no doubt enjoying a taste of one of the most exclusive malts in Scotland.

Royal Lochnagar 1991 was bottled by Signatory, from a 1991 cask of this famous single malt, and released in 2007 as part of their vintage cask series.

This 16 year old single malt whisky was bottled at cask strength and has matured well. It is beautifully spicy with a hint of smoke and a touch of xmas pud and dark chocolate.

Only 640 bottles were produced so jump to the front of the queue if you can!

The Dalmore Whisky distillery is situated on the banks of the Cromarty Firth looking south over the Black Isle and was opened in 1839. The single malt produced has won numerous awards over the years and is full bodied and flavoursome and ages extremely well perhaps better than any other malt. Some of the production has formed part of Whyte & Mackay blends for many decades and they actually now own the distillery.

At the Online Whisky Shop we hold Dalmore Single Malt Whisky in high regard and we recommend each individual malt in the range without reservation.

Unfortunately for many the older maturities are rare and therefore pricey, however the younger versions are very good in their own right.

Dalmore 12 is one of our best selling highland malts and rightly so as it is very, very good. A beautiful colour and taste to match – smooth and comforting with touches of spice, citrus and golden toffee – wonderful on its own or on the rocks, or with water or ginger ale – the choice is yours.

Dalmore 40 is definitely worth a meeting with the bank manager but don’t take a bottle with you as you might not get it back. Laid down in 1966, bottled in 2006, after the ‘angel’s share’ the spirit remaining would only fill 1000 bottles – so this is rare and expensive.

This is richness personified – clootie dumpling, finest dark chocolate, orange shred marmalade with a touch of almond and as smooth as it comes or you can just keep it as an investment! It is entirely up to you.

Tomintoul is one of the newer Scottish distilleries having been established as recently as 1964. The distillery is found in the centre of Cairngorm National Park in the Speyside Region of the Highlands of Scotland.

One of the contributors to the Whyte & Mackay blends, the distillery also produces a range of Tomintoul Single Malt Whisky of various ages and styles to excite and titilate.

A few of our recommendations are :

Tomintoul 10 is a great introduction to single malt whisky as it has no rough edges and will be enjoyed by almost everyone. You may well reach for this regularly to aid gentle reflection.

Hints of candyfloss, lime and brown sugar infused with malt – very smooth and elegant.

Tomintoul 16 is slightly more assertive than the 10 and this gives us a malt whisky which is close to sublime.
